Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche was born in Nangchen, in the province of Kham, eastern Tibet, in 1920. He began meditation practice at the early age of four, when he attended the teachings his father Chime Dorje. Already at four he had what is called a recognition of the nature of mind. Later he studied with his uncle Samten Gyatso, his root master, as well as with many other lamas of both the Nyingma and Kagyu schools schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
Throughout his life he practiced intensively, and stayed in strict retreat for more than twenty years. He had four sons, each of whom is now an important Buddhist master in his own right. Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche is the root guru of Joseph Wagner, the head of Chönyi Ling.
Born in 1971 near Chamdo in Eastern Tibet, Adzom Paylo Rinpoche is a living siddha. He was recognized very early as a Tulku or incarnation of the great scholar Gyalse Pema Wangyal - son of the famous Adzom Drukpa - by the abbot of his monastery, and is also widely regarded as an incarnation of Jigmey Lingpa.
An extraordinary prodigy from a young age, Adzom Paylo Rinpoche began his studies at the age of 5 and undertook full time retreat at 11. At his teacher's request, Rinpoche began teaching Dzogchen in 1984 when he was 13. Today he teaches regularly at his monastery and throuought Tibet and China, and constantly seeks to better the lives of monks, nuns, laypeople, and schoolchildren.
Students travel from far distances to hear him discourse on texts and practices from the major liturgical traditions within the Nyingma lineage, especially The Essence of the Vast Expanse (Longchen Nyingtig). Adzom Paylo Rinpoche is regarded as a Tulku of Jigmey Lingpa himself. He is also said to be the 30th incarnation proceeding from Manjusri, Trisrong Detsen, and Ngari Panchan.
It is through Adzom Paylo Rinpoche’s blessing that Chönyi Ling Meditation Center was formed, and Rinpoche visits the center whenever he visits the United States.
Knowing the true nature One takes the view to its ultimate point. One takes hold of the kingdom of being free of hope and fear And reigns supreme over samsara and nirvana. - Adzom Paylo Rinpoche
Terton Rinpoche was born in 1957 in Kham, Eastern Tibet. After studying with many great masters, he spent more than 16 years in strict meditation retreat in various caves and hermitages all over the region. Early in his life he began to have visions and reveal treasures (gTer ma), and was recognized as an authentic Terton by Osel Dorje Rinpoche, Khenpo Achok Rinpoche, the Kela incarnation of Chokgyur Lingpa, and Khenpo Jigme Phuntsok. Recipient of a prophecy indicating that he was to build 13 major stupas throughout Tibet, Rinpoche spent more than 10 years fulfilling this prophecy, and during the summer of 2011 his goal was accomplished.
Chönyi Ling helps support Rinpoche’s enlightened activities, including helping to build additional stupas, founding hermitages for meditation retreat, teaching and supporting monks and nuns, and cataloging, printing, and spreading Rinpoche’s own Terma revelations. Gangteng Tulku Rinpoche is the 9th body incarnation of Pema Lingpa, one of the five great Terton kings of Tibet. Rinpoche is the head of the Nyingma school of Vajrayana Buddhism in Bhutan and the head of Gangtey Gompa as well as over 25 other monasteries, shedras (monastic universities), nunneries and retreat centers throughout Bhutan. Gangteng Rinpoche regularly teaches in the US and Canada, Western Europe, Bhutan, Russia, Taiwan and Singapore, spreading the lineage of Pema Lingpa's revealed terma treasures throughout the world.
In particular, Gangteng Rinpoche is renowned as one of the world's leading teachers of the Dzogchen or Great Perfection teachings, and is almost unique in the world today for his willingness to teach the whole of the Dzogchen path without holding anything back.
Chöying Dorje Lama Norsok Rinpoche was born in the Eastern Tibetan region of Kham to an ordinary farming and herding family. Although from a young age he showed deep interest in spiritual development and meditation, he was never officially recognized as a Tulku, or sacred incarnation.
Spending more than 50 years in strict meditation retreat, Rinpoche became famous as a siddha - one possessing the magical powers born of meditation - and well known throughout Kham as an emanation of Marpa the Translator. Practicing mainly the instructions of the Sakya lineage, he nevertheless received teachings from all schools of Tibetan Buddhism, and in particular took the practice of Dzogchen to the ultimate level. To simply enter the valley where he lived was to immediately experience the power of his realization. The entire area was pervaded by the empty, clear and awake quality common to many realized practitioners, but to an astonishing degree. To be in his presence was to automatically recognize him as a fully accomplished master and absolutely incredible being.
After a short illness Rinpoche passed away amidst extremely amazing signs in 2010.
The Vidyadhara Acharya Mahayogi Sridhar Rana Rinpoche was born in Kathmandu, Nepal in 1949. He is a master of the Rime school of Vajrayana Buddhism, with a special emphasis on the Sakya teachings. He has been publicly recognized by HH Sakya Trizen, Chogye Trichen Rinpoche, Karma Thinley Rinpoche and many others as an accomplished master. In early 2017 he completed 21 years of strict retreat. In addition, Ratnashri, as he is known by his students, is also a scholar of the Sanskrit language, Chan and Zen Buddhism; Jodo Shinshu; and the Abhidharma of the Mahayana, Vaibhashika and Theravada traditions.
Joseph Wagner has been a Buddhist practitioner since 1988, and is the resident teacher at Chönyi Ling. A student of many great masters, he is particularly fortunate to have received the Dzogchen transmissions in great detail from Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, and to have had numerous opportunities to clarify their meaning in Tibet, Nepal and India, as well as in the West with some of the main lineage holders of our time.
Joseph has received the authorization and "command" (Tibetan: Ka) to teach the Dharma from several of his Lamas, and regularly leads groups in Denver and Boulder as well as around the world.
